Skin Tag Removal

What are skin tags?

Skin tags are small, noncancerous growths that tend to be the same color as your skin. They often look like a cluster of skin tissue extending out from a tiny stem. They’re sometimes darker and may resemble a raised mole. Most skin tags are between 1-5 mm, but some can grow as large as a few centimeters.

What causes skin tags?

    • Some people are born with skin tags. Other skin tags appear over time.
    • Sun exposure seems to play a role in the development of skin tags and may even play a role in the development of atypical, or dysplastic, skin tags.
    • The role of heredity cannot be under-emphasized. Many families have a type of skin tag known as dysplastic (atypical), which can be associated with a higher frequency of melanoma or skin cancer.

How are skin tags removed?

Skin tags are frequently removed for a variety of reasons. They can be removed by two surgical methods:

  • excision (cutting) followed by stitches and
  • excision with cauterization (a tool is used to burn away the skin tags).

Although laser removal has been tried for skin tags, it is not usually the method of choice for most deep skin tags because the laser light doesn’t penetrate deeply enough.

Typically, the doctor may choose excision with or without stitches, depending on the depth of the skin tag and the type of cosmetic outcome desired.

Skin tag removal cost

Skin tag removal is considered a cosmetic treatment and rarely covered by insurance. Cost per treatment ranges from $500 to $650.
