PRP Therapy

What is PRP Therapy?

PRP stands for Platelet-Rich Plasma. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is your blood plasma that has been enriched with your own concentrated platelets. This concentrated PRP contains several different growth factors that stimulate healing of bone, and joint cartilage, tendons and other structures.

The good news is that the cells responsible for healing injuries is already contained in your blood. Platelets, though best known for their role in clotting blood, also contain proteins called growth factors, which play an important role in the process of healing of injuries.

With Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy, we inject cells that stimulate inflammation, which alerts the body to take notice of the injured tissue again so it can assist in healing the damaged tissue once again. So with PRP, the healing process of injures such as plantar fasciitis, tendon, ligament, bone and cartilage injuries can be accelerated.Platelet-rich plasma has gained substantial popularity in the arena of sports medicine and orthopedics for its ability to enhance healing of both chronic and acute ailments. It can many times augment or even replace surgery, and many patients have decreased pain after the first injection.

How does PRP Therapy Work?

In PRP Therapy, the first step is a blood draw. This blood is placed in a centrifuge, which separates the different types of blood cells (red cells, white cells, and platelets). After separation, the platelet rich blood has as much as 10 times richer the concentration of growth factors. We will then inject the platelet-rich portion of blood directly into your injured area.

After this process of injection, the area of your injury may actually increase in pain more for a few weeks while the injected cells are given time to work. But after this time, the inflammation and pain will start to decrease as the healing process begins and continues. Several weeks later, however, the healing benefits begin to reduce inflammation and pain to a noticeable degree.

PRP Therapy can many times augment or even replace surgery, and many patients have decreased pain after the first injection. And unlike steroid injection, PRP does no damage to the joint or joint structures – and it’s benefits are long-lasting due to the tissue regeneration that occurs.
