What is Hormone Replacement Therapy?
Hormone Replacement Therapy, or HRT, is a medical treatment focused on replenishing a person’s decreasing hormone levels. As we age, these hormone levels lessen. In women, estrogen and progesterone levels can drop significantly due to menopause. Decreases in testosterone can affect women as well. In men, declining testosterone is the main problem. Declining hormone levels can cause many symptoms including:
- Fatigue and Lack of Energy
- Trouble Sleeping
- Anxious, Moody or Depressed
- Diminished Mental Acuity and Memory
- Increased Weight, Especially at the Waist
- Difficulty Losing Weight
- Loss of Muscle Strength
- Depleted Sexual Libido and Performance
- Pain in Joints or Muscles
In men, decreasing testosterone can cause symptoms such as decreased energy, loss of muscle mass, irritable mood, decrease in beard growth, and decreased frequency of erections.
“My husband wanted me to tell you that the pelleting was the “best investment EVER!” Haha, he has already seen such a huge improvement (perhaps my implied wink will let you know where especially). And I can tell you that the relief and daily improvement has been vast for me, too. No headaches, a marked improved mood — no depression! less anxiety! — and much better sleep. My skin is looking better, too. The outcome has been wonderful. I had no idea to what extent I must have been suffering until it was absent.”

What is Pellet Therapy?
Pellet therapy uses hormones originally derived from plant sources. The pellets are placed under the skin of the gluteal area through a tiny incision, and continually release a small but steady stream of hormones into the bloodstream. Unlike typical oral and transdermal forms of therapy – which can vary in how well they are absorbed – pelleting provides sustained, well-absorbed hormone levels throughout the day, for up to 4 to 6 months.
A compounding pharmacist, using strict federal guidelines, compounds the estrogen and testosterone utilized in the pellets. These pellets, are about the size of a tic-tac or smaller. The implantation procedure is easily performed in the office and takes about 15 minutes.
What are Pellets?
Pellets contain a natural plant source of estrogen and testosterone. A compounding pharmacist, using strict federal guidelines, compounds the estrogen and testosterone utilized in the pellets. These pellets, which are smaller than a grain of rice, are placed in the fatty tissue underneath the skin and most closely mimic the actions of healthy ovaries and testicles with regards to hormone release into the bloodstream. The implantation procedure is easily performed in the office.
Pellet Therapy for Women:
Hormone pellets have been shown to be very effective in improving sex drive, sexual response and performance, relieving menopausal symptoms, improving bone density, restoring sleep patterns, improving depression, anxiety, irritability, and mood swings.
Pellet Therapy for Men:
Testosterone levels begin to decline in men starting in their early 30’s. Most men need to be tested around age 45. Symptoms decreasing testosterone in men include fatigue, loss of mental acuity, loss of libido, and difficulty achieving, or sustaining erection.
What if my doctor or gynecologist says that there is ‘no data’ to support the use of pellet implants?
It’s about a patient making an informed choice. Researched and developed since 1939 in the US and Europe, there is a myriad of data to support the ‘long term’ safety and efficacy of hormones delivered by pellet implants. Hormone pellet therapy has been used in 5 continents and has been studied for over 80 years. There are hundreds of studies available to practitioners with regards to hormone pellet therapy, unfortunately most practitioners have not read them and base their opinions solely on one or only a few studies. Currently in the US most physicians are opposed to all forms of estrogen and testosterone related hormone therapy, based on a few studies that show a slight increased risk of breast cancer, heart attack and stroke. Many that have analyzed these studies have found flaws in their design – and some conclusions drawn from them are difficult to directly relate to pelleting therapy. For instance, one commonly quoted study, called the Women’s Health Initiative, showed a small increased risk of breast cancer in women who were treated, however these women were treated with medroxyprogesterone, which has been shown in other studies to increase risk of breast cancer. Most studies regarding hormone pelleting show no clear increase risk of cancer or cardiovascular disease. In fact, numerous studies on testosterone replacement show decreased risk of cardiovascular disease. And low testosterone levels in both men and women are associated with more occurence of cancer of all types.
