What Causes Migraines?
The cause of migraines isn’t completely understood, but it’s thought that both genetic and environmental factors play a role. One theory is that migraines could be caused by changes in the brainstem and how it interacts with the trigeminal nerve.
Another possibility is that an imbalance of the chemical serotonin is a culprit. Serotonin aids in the regulation of pain in your body’s nervous system. During a migraine attack, this serotonin level drops, which triggers your trigeminal nerve to release neuropeptides, which may cause the migraine pain.
Migraine Headache Symptoms
Migraines are typified by the following symptoms:
- Pulsing, throbbing pain
- Light sensitivity
- Pain on one side
- Vision changes, blurred vision
- A migraine can last from four to 72 hours or more if left untreated
Bridgeport Laser & Wellness in Portland offers treatments that can aid helping to avert or alleviate migraines.
In 2010, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved BOTOX® as a medication for migraine headaches. Studies show that BOTOX® is an effective tool in protecting against chronic migraines and headache syndromes.
How does BOTOX® Work to Prevent Migraines?
BOTOX® works by preventing the release of specific brain chemicals as well as blocking the movement of certain nerves and muscles. By doing so it is thought that BOTOX® blocks pain messages from being sent to the brain through nerve pathways. It also relaxes muscles, making them less sensitive to pain. By helping to prevent migraines before they start, BOTOX® can typically prevent 8 or 9 headache days per month on average.
The treatment is given at intervals of about 12 weeks as multiple injections around the head and neck to try to dull future headache symptoms. Certain migraine headache types respond better than others. For those whose headaches are described as imploding (vise-like, squeezing, crushing, etc) have a much higher response rate to Botox injections (>80%) than those headaches described as exploding in nature (15%). Headaches due to muscle spasms (especially in the back neck region) respond well to Botox too as well as most types of tension headaches. Cost varies depending on the number of units required but generally falls within $250 to $750 per treatment.
